An MV-algebra is defined to be local if it has just one maximal ideal. Local MV-algebras have been studied by \textit{L. P. Belluce, A. Di Nola} and \textit{A. Lettieri}, [Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo, II. Ser. 42, 347--361 (1993; Zbl 0817.06011)]. The present paper contains a series of deep results on MV-algebras and local MV-algebras focusing on two types of representations of MV-algebras; namely, on representations via sheaves of local MV-algebras, and on representations via weak Boolean products of local MV-algebras. Further, the authors describe the class of local MV-algebras whose radical is retractive. It is proved that the class of local MV-algebras is universal; in this connection, a result of \textit{J. Gispert i Brasó, D. Mundici} and \textit{A. Torrens Torrell}, [J. Algebra 219, 214--233 (1999; Zbl 0937.06008)] is generalized.
