Let \(\mu\) be a Borel measure on \(\mathbb R\) and \(\tau > 0\). A \(\mu\)-measurable function \(\psi:\mathbb R\to \mathbb C\) is called an extremal signature if \(|\psi|=1\) \(\mu\)-almost everywhere and \(\int_{\mathbb R}F(x)\psi(x)d\mu(x)=0\) for all entire functions of exponential type \(\tau\) such that \(F|_{\mathbb R}\in L^{1}(\mu)\). The authors find extremal signatures connected with Hermite-Biehler entire functions. This result permits to find best \(L^{1}(\mu)\)-approximations by entire functions of exponential type for some special functions.
