Let \(F\) be a family of meromorphic functions in a domain \(D\), and \(k\) be a positive integer which is at least 2. If, for every \(f\), in \(F\), its \(k\)th iterate has no fixed point in \(D\), then \(F\) is a normal family in \(D\). The family in the unit disc consisting of the functions \(f_m(z)= 1/(mz)\) for \(m= 1,2,3,\dots\), shows the assumption ``\(k\)th iterate has no fixed point in \(D\)'' cannot be replaced by ``\(k\)-th iterate has no repelling fixed point in \(D\)''. The concise and interesting result extends work of \textit{S. Wang} and \textit{S. Wu} [Acta Math. Sin. 45, No. 3, 545--550 (2002; Zbl 1092.30050)] and complements results in \textit{M. Essén} and \textit{S. Wu} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 62, No. 1, 139--148 (2000; Zbl 0955.30026)].
