Let \(f\in L^1({\mathbb R}^d)\), \(d\geq 2\), and define its periodization with respect to the lattice \(\rho{\mathbb Z}^d\) (\(\rho \in SO(d)\), a rotation) to be the function \[ g_\rho(x) = \sum_{\nu \in {\mathbb Z}^d} f(x-\nu). \] Functions for which \(g_\rho\) vanishes identically for almost all \(\rho\) are connected to a problem of Steinhaus (does there exist a subset of the plane all of whose rotations contain exactly one integer point, no matter where translated?). The main result here is that if \(d\geq 3\) and for \(f \in L^1({\mathbb R}^d) \cap L^p({\mathbb R}^d)\), \(1 \leq p < 2d/(d+2)\), with vanishing periodizations, we have \(\| f\| _{p'} \leq C \| f\| _p\), where \(1/p+1/p'=1\) and \(C\) dependes only on \(p\) and the dimension. This generalizes a result of the reviewer and T. Wolff.
