Repetitive or multipass processes can be illustrated by considering machine operations where the workpiece is processed by a series of sweeps or passes of a processing device. On each pass an output or pass profil acts as forcing function to the next profile. As an industrial example long wall coal cutting is considered in the book. The book is organized into seven chapters. After a short introduction the features of repetitive processes are illustrated by examples. An abstract representation of such processes is given. Structural links with other dynamical systems e.g. with the 2D linear systems described by the Roesser state space models are discussed. In chapter 3 asymptotic stability an bounded input/bounded output stability are defined. It is shown that for repetitive processes in addition ``stability along the pass'' must be demanded. For important special cases necessary and sufficient conditions are derived. The fourth chapter is devoted to stability tests. Different computational procedures for eigenvalue based tests and for algebraic tests are presented and illustrated by numerical examples. In chapter 5 a new interesting approach to stability tests is developed: simulation based stability tests. If suitable well behaved plant step response data is available or can be obtained by simulation studies, information concerning stability and system performance can be obtained. Chapter 6 presents some initial results on controller design for earlier discussed examples. Design algorithms are proposed. Finally chapter 7 summarizes the results and briefly outlines some possible future research topics.
