The maximal subgroups of the O'Nan group (Q1065926)

In this paper the maximal subgroups of the O'Nan simple group \(G\simeq ON\) are determined. As usual this amounts to the classification of the conjugacy classes of the maximal, nonlocal subgroups of G. While some candidates of such groups are treated by hand (using for instance structure constants) other candidates are handled with the help of a computer. Here a 45-dimensional, 7-modular representation of the triple cover of G is used. A longer, but computerfree proof of the same result as the author's was obtained by \textit{S. Yoshiara} [J. Fac. Sci., Univ. Tokyo, Sect. I A 32, 105-141 (1985; Zbl 0571.20009)].
