By an annulus, the authors mean a bounded domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb C^n\) which has the form \(\Omega = \Omega_1 \setminus \overline{\Omega_2}\), where \(\Omega_1\) and \(\Omega_2\) are bounded open sets in \(\mathbb C^n\), and where \(\overline{\Omega_2} \subset \Omega_1\) and \(\Omega_1\) is connected. They use homological algebra and functional analysis of non-Hausdorff topological vector spaces to get the following characterization of annuli in which the \(\overline \partial \)-problem can be solved with \(L^2\)-estimates: the following are equivalent for the annulus \(\Omega = \Omega_1 \setminus \overline{\Omega_2}\) : (i) \(H^{p,q}_{L^2} (\Omega )=0\), (ii) \(H^{p,q}_{L^2} (\Omega_1 )=0\) and \(H^{p,q+1}_{c, W^{-1}} (\Omega_2 )=0\) , where the last statement means that the \(\overline \partial\)-problem can be solved with prescribed support on \(\overline \Omega_2\) and estimates in the \(W^{-1}\)-Sobolev norm. For the proof, three standard realizations of the \(\overline \partial\)-operator on Sobolev spaces are introduced and its associated cohomologies and exact sequences. In the following the authors use the exact sequences to obtain further results about annuli, but also to deduce new results about the cohomology of pseudoconvex domains. It turns out that a basic estimate for the \(\overline \partial\)-operator in the Sobolev \(W^s\)-theory plays a central role. The goal of this paper is to extend and understand the methods of homological algebra and non-Hausdorff topological vector spaces, which were started by \textit{C. Laurent-Thiébaut} and \textit{M.-C. Shaw} [Math. Z. 274, No. 3--4, 1165--1176 (2013; Zbl 1423.32013)].
