The authors study \(R\)-boundedness of operator families \(\mathcal T\subset \mathcal B(X,Y)\), where \(X\) and \(Y\) are Banach spaces. They first obtain some generalization of the Kahane contraction principle for spaces of cotype \(q\) and its dual formulation. Then they are able to get the \(R\)-boundedness of \(\{T_f: \|f\|_{L^{r}(S)}\leq 1\}\) for operator valued functions \(T:S\to \mathcal B(X,Y)\), where \(T_fx=\int_S T(s)x f(s)\,d\mu(s)\) under certain assumptions on the cotype of \(X\) and type of \(Y\). As a main consequence of their theorems, they improve a result by \textit{M.\,Girardi} and \textit{L.\,Weis} [``Criteria for \(R\)-boundedness of operator families'', Lect.\ Notes Pure Appl.\ Math.\ 234, 203--221 (2003; Zbl 1053.47031)] stated under the Fourier type condition, showing that, if \(X\) has cotype \(q\) and \(Y\) has type \(p\) and \(1/r=1/p-1/q\), then the family \(\{T(t):t\in \mathbb R^d\}\) is \(R\)-bounded whenever \(T\) belongs to the Besov class \(B_{r,1}^{d/r}(\mathbb R^d, \mathcal B(X,Y))\). Applications to obtain \(R\)-boundedness of semigroups and evolution families, and to obtain sufficient conditions for existence of solutions for stochastic Cauchy problems are also provided.
