The authors develop an algorithm for solving moving boundary problems, based on a combined level set method and boundary integral method, allowing to handle topological changes while maintaining the highly accurate aspects of boundary integral formulations. They present a coupled level set-boundary element algorithm for modelling a class of free boundary problems, in particular, two-dimensional breaking waves over sloping breaches. The algorithm rests on a fully nonlinear potential model for a single fluid with appropriate boundary conditions, with both the interface location and the velocity potential recast as an embedded function throughout the domain. The use of a boundary integral method avoids far-field boundary conditions for the air, the use of a level set method avoids complex gridding. Reviewer's remark: The authors aim to extend this approach to three-dimensional flows and to introduce a new model for what happens when the breaking wave reconnects with the surface.
