The authors consider the periodicity of entire functions by using Nevanlinna theory. It is known that an entire function \(f(z)\) must be periodic if \(P(f(z))\) is periodic, where \(P(z)\) is a nonconstant polynomial, see \textit{A. Rényi} and \textit{C. Rényi} [J. Anal. Math. 14, 303--310 (1965; Zbl 0147.06701)]. The authors give a generalization of this result. Let \(g(z)\) be a transcendental entire function such that \(N(r, 1/g)=S(r,g)\), \(A(z)\) be non-vanishing meromorphic function satisfying \(T(r,A)=S(r,g)\), and let \(Q(z)\) be a polynomial with at least two non-zero terms. If \(A(z)Q(g(z))\) is periodic of period \(c\ne0\), then \(g(z)\) is periodic of period \(c\) or \(\delta_Q c\), where \(\delta_Q\) is an integer determined by \(Q(z)\). The authors also consider some questions related to the conjecture of C. C. Yang concerning periodicity of entire functions see, e.g. \textit{P. Li} et al. [Houston J. Math. 45, No. 2, 431--437 (2019; Zbl 1428.30030)].
