The concept of Morita context appeared in the work of Morita on equivalence of categories of modules. A fundamental result of Morita states that the categories of modules over two rings \(R\) and \(S\) are equivalent if and only if there exists a strict Morita context connecting \(R\) and \(S\). Morita contexts have been used in the study of group actions on rings and Galois theory of commutative rings. This theory has been also developed for rings with local units. As an application, the infinite dimensional version of the duality theorem of Blattner-Montgomery was deduced and explained in a nice way by using Morita contexts and Hopf-Galois theory. A concept dual to Morita context was contructed for coalgebras by Takeuchi, he defined what is now known as Morita-Takeuchi context and proved that the categories of comodules over two coalgebras \(C\) and \(D\) are equivalent if and only if \(C\) and \(D\) are connected by a strict Morita-Takeuchi context. A natural question was how far is an arbitrary Morita context (resp. Morita-Takeuchi context) from an equivalence of categories. An answer was given by \textit{T. Kato} [J. Algebra 25, 15-24 (1973; Zbl 0252.16006)] and by \textit{B. J. Müller} [J. Algebra 28, 389-407 (1974; Zbl 0277.16019)]. In this paper, the authors extend Morita theory for Abelian categories using wide Morita contexts introduced by \textit{W. K. Nicholson}, and \textit{J. F. Watters} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 103, No. 3, 399-408 (1988; Zbl 0673.16025)] and also by \textit{F. Castaño Iglesias} and \textit{J. Gómez Torrecillas} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 131, No. 3, 213-225 (1998; Zbl 0927.16034)]. Several equivalence results are given for wide Morita contexts between Abelian categories, widely extending equivalence theorems for categories of modules and comodules due to T. Kato, B. Müller and Bebec. In the case of Grothendieck categories they derive equivalence results using quotient categories. The general results are applied to rings with identity, rings with local units, graded rings, Doi-Hopf modules and coalgebras. This paper is a very nice study of wide Morita context for Abelian categories and contains many applications.
