The author defines and develops united \(KK\)-theory for real \(C^{*}\)-algebras. This theory combines real, complex, and self-conjugate \(KK\)-theory in a manner that generalizes the united \(K\)-theory defined by the author [\textit{J. L. Boersema}, K-Theory 26, 345--402 (2002; Zbl 1024.46021)]. The author combines united \(KK\)-theory and united \(K\)-theory in a universal coefficient theorem that is an analogue for real \(C^{*}\)-algebras (satisfying appropriate conditions) of the universal coefficient theorem relating the \(K\)-theory and \(KK\)-theory of complex \(C^{*}\)-algebras that was proven by \textit{J. Rosenberg} and \textit{C. Schochet} [Duke Math. J. 55, 431--474 (1987; Zbl 0644.46051)]. One motivation for proving a universal coefficient theorem for real \(C^{*}\)-algebras is the hope that, as in the complex case, this theorem can be used to prove \(K\)-theoretic classification theorems for real \(C^{*}\)-algebras. Another argument for the value of this paper's universal coefficient theorem is that it solves a problem the statement of which is independent of the united theories. The author shows that two real separable \(C^{*}\)-algebras whose complexifications are in the bootstrap category are \(KK\)-equivalent if and only if their united \(K\)-theory groups are isomorphic.
