Let \(N\) be a von Neumann algebra, \(\varphi\) a normal semifinite trace on \(N\), and let \(S(N,\varphi)\) be the set of all \(\varphi\)-measurable operators. Given an \(N\)-bimodule \(X\subset S(N,\varphi)\), a subspace \(M\subset X\) is \textit{normal} if it contains all suprema of increasing nets of positive operators. It is \textit{solid} if \(x\in X\), \(y\in M\), and \(|x|\leq|y|\) imply that \(x\in M\). A normal solid subspace is a \textit{band}. A subspace \(M\subset X\) is a \textit{projection band} if \(X=M\oplus M^\perp\), where \(M^\perp=\{x\in X: xy=x^*y=0\) \( \forall y\in M\}\). It is shown that a selfadjoint projection band is a band, and that, under certain condition, a band is a projection band. Let \(L_r(N)\), \(r\geq 1\), be the completion of the set \(\{x\in N: \varphi(|x|^r)<\infty\}\) with respect to the norm \(\varphi(|x|^r)^{1/r}\). It is shown that each band projection on \(L_r(N)\) is of the form of a multiplication operator by a projection, and that \(\varphi\) decomposes into a sum of two non-zero semifinite traces.
