The authors refer to natural generalizations of classical regular polytopes, namely to locally toroidal ones. A regular polytope is said to be locally toroidal if its minimal sections which are not of spherical type are toroids. The classification of locally toroidal polytopes of rank 4 is nearly complete and can be found in a series of papers of the authors and others. Here the locally toroidal polytopes of rank higher than 4 are investigated. At this stage, the authors only allow the facets and vertex-figures to be toroids (although examples with toroidal sections of smaller rank are known). By this restriction, only polytopes of rank 5 and 6 are obtainable, and the paper contains a complete classification for rank 5 and a partial one for rank 6. More precisely, for rank 5 there are three finite polytopes of this type, and for rank 6 there are six infinite families and at least eight sporadic examples. Finally, the authors show that there exist no chiral toroids of rank larger than 3, and hence no chiral polytopes with these as components.
