Let \(R\) be a valuation domain and \(Q\) its quotient field. An \(R\)-module \(M\) is called uniserial if its submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion. The author shows that the question of the characterization of direct sums \(\bigoplus_{i=1}^ nU_ i\) of uniserial modules \(U_ i\) satisfying the property: \((*)\) every element is contained in a pure uniserial submodule can be reduced to the direct sums \(U_ i\bigoplus U_ j\) satisfying \((*)\) for every pair \(i\neq j\). For the classification of the later the author introduces the notion of the type of an element \(x\in M\) as the ordered pair consisting of the height ideal \(H_ M(x)=\{r^{-1}\in Q\); \(x\in rM\}\) and of the annihilator ideal \(\text{Ann} x=\{r\in R; rx=0\}\). Without going into more details the investigation leads to three cases depending on relations between the types of elements of the two uniserials considered (the same height ideal, the same annihilator ideal of two non zero elements \(u\in U\), \(v\in V\) or different isomorphy class of the height ideals and annihilator ideals of elements of \(U\) and \(V\)).
