In more than one dimension, interpolation using piecewise polynomials can be difficult to handle because interpolation linear systems have to be solved. An alternative is the so-called quasi-interpolation from spline or indeed many other function spaces. There, prescribed basis functions from the spline space in two dimensions, say, are linearly combined with coefficients that come from a linear operator which is to be applied to the approximand. Only discrete operators are used in this article. The quasi-interpolants stem from polynomial spline spaces defined by non-uniform spline partitions in two dimensions, and they are constructed to minimize the norm of the quasi-interpolation operator while certain approximation orders are guaranteed. Families of such quasi-interpolants are constructed which reproduce certain polynomial orders and thereby lead to the desired approximation orders while giving near-best (i.e., minimal) operator norms.
