There are several different approaches available to solve the intriguing missing mass problem of general relativity theory when applied to the motion of spiral galaxies and galaxy clusters. The universe could be thought of, for instance, as being filled with dark matter which would act gravitationally without being observable. In the present paper, the authors introduce a new model describing a perfect fluid of vortices which actually is close to the string fluid model, except that the Nambu strings are replaced by solutions of the full--field equations of the Abelian--Higgs model. With this model, the authors determine quantitatively the modified dynamics generated by a static spherical fluid of vortices. In contrast to other proposals, the new model provides the implementation of a finite amount of dark matter.
