Polynomial and other spline functions are constructed in this paper which minimize certain semi-norms in connection with Sobolev spaces. The approximants always satisfy interpolation conditions to nodes in one dimension. They are, moreover, closely related to the piecewise approximating and interpolating functions known as L-splines. The aforementioned minimization properties are studied, algorithmic methods are given to compute their coefficients, explicit formulae for coefficients are provided, and, furthermore, problems and numerical examples are given too.
