For the Jacobi weights \[ w_{\alpha,\beta}(x):=(1-x)^{\alpha}(1+x)^{\beta}, \] consider the error of the best weighted approximation of a (proper) function \(f\) by the set \({\mathbb P}_n\) of all algebraic polynomials of degree less than or equal to \(n-1\), that is, \[ E_n(f)_{\alpha,\beta,p}:=\inf_{p_n\in{\mathbb P}_n}{\|w_{\alpha,\beta}(f-p_n)\|}_p, \] where \({\|\cdot\|}_p\) denotes the usual \(L_p\)-norm on \([-1,1]\). In this paper, some direct (Jackson-type) inequalities of the form \[ E_n(f)_{\alpha,\beta,p}\leq\omega(f,n,\alpha,\beta,p) \] are proved, where \(\omega(f,n,\alpha,\beta,p)\) are certain moduli of smoothness. Furthermore, some Whitney-type inequalities are proved.
