Let \(G^{(\infty)}\) be a universal Chevalley group over \(K=\bar F_ p\), and for a fixed m, \(1\leq m\leq \infty\), let \(G=G^{(m)}\) be the finite subgroup of \(G^{(\infty)}\) of the rational points over \(F_ q\), where \(q=p^ m\). The author considers the representations of \(G^{(m)}\), \(1\leq m\leq \infty\), over K. Using the Steinberg Tensor Product Theorem systematically, he gives a method (too technical to be stated here) of determining the composition factors of a tensor product of two irreducible modules in terms of the paths in a certain directed graph. He then gives a recursive formula for the projective indecomposable characters of \(G^{(m)}\) \((m<\infty)\). As a corollary he obtains a ``twisted'' product formula for certain projective indecomposable characters. Some examples of degrees of projective indecomposable characters in groups of low rank are worked out; the case of \(SL(4,2^ m)\) is new.
