Let \(\varphi(q)\) be the Euler function and \(L^{(h)}(s,\chi)\) the \(h\)th derivative of the Dirichlet \(L\)-function \(L(s,\chi)\). The author states without proof some asymptotic formulas for the mean square sum \[ \varphi(q)^{-1} \sum_{\chi\pmod q} | L^{(h)}(s,\chi)|^ 2, \tag{1} \] where summation is over all characters \(\chi\) modulo \(q\). For example, if \(N\geq 1\) is an integer, \(t\) is real and \(1-N<\sigma<N\), then \[ \begin{multlined} (p-1)^{-1} \sum_{\chi\pmod p} | L(\sigma+it,\chi)|^ 2=\\ \zeta(2\sigma)+ 2p^{1- 2\sigma}\Gamma(2\sigma-1)\zeta(2\sigma-1)\text{Re} {{\Gamma(1-\sigma+it)} \over {\Gamma(\sigma+it)}}-p^{-2\sigma} |\zeta(\sigma+it)|^ 2+\\ 2\text{ Re}\left\{\sum_{n=0}^{N-1} {{-\sigma+it} \choose n} p^{-\sigma+it-n} \zeta(\sigma-n+it) \zeta(\sigma+n-it)+O(p^{-\sigma- N} (| t|+1)^{2N+{1\over 2}-\sigma})\right\}\end{multlined} \] except at the points where the main terms on the right-hand side have singularities. If \(h\geq 1\) in (1) the result is similar, with error term being \[ O(p^{-\sigma-N}(| t|+1)^{2N+{1\over 2}-\sigma} (\log p(| t|+1))^{2h}), \] and the result improves a previous result of the author and \textit{K. Matsumoto} [Math. Z. 208, 23--39 (1991; Zbl 0744.11041)]. Moreover, the exceptional cases can be treated as the limiting cases of the above formula. For example, the author states an explicit form of the asymptotic formula for \[ \varphi(q)^{-1} \sum_{\chi\pmod q} | L'(\textstyle {1\over 2}+it,\chi)|^ 2. \]
