By a conjecture of \textit{O. Iyama} [Adv. Math. 210, No. 1, 51-82 (2007; Zbl 1115.16006)], the endomorphism algebras of two maximal \(l\)-orthogonal modules \(M\) and \(N\) in a module category \(\Lambda\)-mod of an Artin algebra should be derived equivalent. A candidate cotilting module expected to induce a derived equivalence is \(X:=\Hom_\Lambda(M,N)\). One of the main results of this article, Theorem 2.6, characterises in terms of relative homology with respect to \(M\) and \(N\) when \(X\) is cotilting. Moreover \(M\) being maximal \(l\)-orthogonal is shown (Corollary 2.4) to be equivalent to \(M\) being a generator-cogenerator and \(l\)-selforthogonal and its endomorphism ring having global dimension bounded above by \(l+2\).
