As the author points out, the theory of association schemes has been regarded as ``group theory without groups'' and this has led to finding a way of inducing class functions from a subscheme, thereby generalizing the induction of class functions from a subgroup of a group. The author shows in this paper that induced class functions can be interpreted as conditional expectations. This result has ramifications in related aspects of group theory, combinatorics and probability theory.
