Apart from physical interpretations the authors give an asymptotic formula for the sum \[ \alpha_ N(s)=\sum '_{\max (| m|,| n|)\leq N}(Q(m,n))^{-s}\quad (s=\sigma +it), \] where Q(x,y) is a positive definite binary quadratic form and the accent denotes the omission of (0,0). A similar problem with \(x^ 2+y^ 2+z^ 2\) in place of Q(x,y) is also considered. These results are well-known but the simple approach given here is of some interest. In fact the well-known Epstein zeta-function defined by \(\sum_{{\mathfrak m}}(Q(m_ 1,...,m_ d))^{-s}\) where \(Q(x_ 1,...,x_ d)\) is any positive definite quadratic form, converges in \(\sigma >d/2\), has a simple pole at \(s=d/2\) with residue \(\pi^{d/2}| Q|^{- 1/2}(\Gamma (d/2))^{-1},\) (\(| Q|\) being the determinant of the matrix of Q) and is analytic everywhere except at this pole. It has also a functional equation as s goes to \(d/2-s.\) For a proof of these facts and references to original papers of Epstein see pages 60-73 of \textit{C. L. Siegel}'s ``Lectures on advanced analytic number theory'' (TIFR Lect. Math. 23) (1965; Zbl 0278.10001).
