This paper continues the work of an earlier paper of the author, \textit{J. E. Morel}, and \textit{W. F. Miller jun.} [ibid. 69, 283-324 (1987; Zbl 0627.65146)] applying an asymptotic method to numerical approximations for the neutron transport equation in the case of optically thick meshes. Emphasis is placed here on improving performance in the boundary layers of the problem. An LD (linear discontinuous) method inspired from finite- element considerations is derived. Numerical calculations presented support claims for higher reliability of the method.
