    The author uses a finite element Galerkin method to study the following single-phase quasi-linear Stefan problem with forcing term \[ U_\tau - (a(U)U_y)_y = F(y,\tau) \quad\text{in } \Omega(\tau) \times (0,T_0] \] with initial and boundary conditions as well as free boundary \(S\) satisfying \[ S_\tau = -a(U)U_y(S(\tau),\tau), \quad S(0) = 1, \] where \(\Omega(\tau) = \{ y: 0 < y < S(\tau) \}\) for each \(\tau \in (0,T_0]\). Existence and uniqueness of the semidescrite Galerkin approximation of (1),(2) are proved and optimal error estimates are derived in \(L_2\), \(L_\infty\), \(H_1\) and \(H_2\) norms.
