    The authors study the pseudospectral Legendre method for general nonlinear smooth and nonsmooth constrained problems of the calculus of variations of the form: \[ J(X)= \int^T_0 G(\tau, X(\tau), \dot X(\tau), \ddot X(\tau)) d\tau\to\text{ Extremum} \] \[ X(0)= X_0;\quad S(\tau, X(\tau),\dot X(\tau))\leq 0,\quad 0\leq \tau\leq T;\quad Z(X(T), \dot X(T), \ddot X(T),T)= 0. \] Illustrative examples are included to confirm the convergence of the pseudospectral Legendre method.
