Existence of a nontrivial solution of the semilinear elliptic equation \(- \Delta u= | u|^{p-2} u+ f(x,u)\) in \(G\), \(u=0\) on \(\partial G\) is shown in this paper. Here \(G\) denotes a smooth bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) \((N\geq 4)\), \(p-1= (N+2)/ (N-2)\) (the so-called critical Sobolev exponent) and \(f(x,u)= \lambda u+ g(x,u)\) is Carathéodory function with \(\lambda_{j-1}< \lambda< \lambda_ j\) (\(\lambda_ j\) being eigenvalues to \(-\Delta\)) and \(g(x,u)= o(u)\) at \(u=0\), \(g(x,u)= o(| u|^ q)\) at infinity, with \(q= p-1\). Moreover, \(f\) satisfies some geometric conditions which allow to apply a generalized version of the Mountain Pass theorem without the Palais-Smale condition. This follows from a linking condition at the origin.
