Statistical convergence is more general than classical convergence, and the notion of equistatistical convergence is stronger than that of statistical uniform convergence. These concepts were introduced and studied by \textit{M. Balcerzak} et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 328, No. 1, 715--729 (2007; Zbl 1119.40002)]. In the present paper, the authors introduce the concept of deferred Nörlund equistatistical convergence and use it in conjunction with the notions of equistatistical convergence, statistical pointwise convergence and statistical uniform convergence in order to establish several inclusion relations between them. The same concept of Nörlund equistatistical convergence is used to prove a Korovkin-type approximation theorem which is a non-trivial extension of some well-known Korovkin-type approximation theorems from the literature. The rate of the deferred Nörlund equistatistical convergence of a sequence of positive linear operators defined on a space of continuous functions is described in terms of the modulus of continuity. Several examples illustrate the general results.
