As the title of the paper gives little idea of its contents, we will introduce some relevant definitions. Let \(G\) be a finite group and let \(p\) be a prime divisor of \(| G|\). Let \(R\) be a complete discrete valuation ring with unique maximal ideal \((\pi)\), whose quotient field \(K\) has characteristic 0. We suppose that \(R/(\pi)\) is a field of characteristic \(p\) and that \(K\) contains primitive \(| G|\)-th roots of unity. Let \(H\) be a subgroup of \(G\) and let \(S_R(H)\) denote the Hecke algebra of the permutation module over \(R\) of \(G\) acting on the cosets of \(H\). Given an irreducible complex character \(\chi\) of \(G\), let \(e_\chi\) denote the corresponding primitive central idempotent of \(KG\). Similarly, let \(e_H\) be the idempotent \(| H|^{-1}\widehat H\) in \(KG\), where \(\widehat H\) denotes the sum of all the elements of \(H\). Let \(\Phi\) denote the set of irreducible complex characters which are the constituents of the permutation character (over \(K\)) of \(G\) acting on the cosets of \(H\). These are the characters \(\chi\) for which \(e_\chi e_H\not=0\). Given a primitive idempotent \(\delta\) of \(S_R(H)\) there exists a subset \(\beta\) of \(\Phi\) such that \(\delta=\sum_{\chi\in\beta}e_\chi e_H\). In this case we write \(\delta=\delta_\beta\) and when \(\delta_\beta\) is centrally primitive, we say that \(\beta\) or \(\delta_\beta S_R(H)\) is an \(S_R(H)\)-block. There is a homomorphism \(\phi\colon Z(RG)\to Z(S_R(H))\), where \(Z(A)\) denotes the centre of any ring \(A\), and if \(e_B\) is a block idempotent of \(RG\) corresponding to a block \(B\), \(\phi(e_B)=\sum_\beta\delta_\beta\), for certain blocks \(\beta\) of \(S_R(H)\). Thus \(\text{Irr}(B)\cap\Phi\) is a union of \(S_R(H)\)-blocks, where \(\text{Irr}(B)\) denotes the set of irreducible characters in \(B\). In the paper under review, the authors study \(S_R(H)\)-blocks mainly in the case where \(H\) is a \(p'\)-subgroup. They obtain an orthogonality relation for the irreducible characters in an \(S_R(H)\)-block and evaluate the number of \(S_R(H)\)-blocks that occur in \(\phi(e_B)\) in terms of block-theoretic invariants of \(B\). They also give various miscellaneous results under special hypotheses.
