The author studies the universal enveloping algebra \(U\) of the Lie superalgebra \(p(n)\). The center \(Z\) of the factor \(\overline U\) of \(U\) by its radical is fairly explicitly described. Namely it is proven that the Harish-Chandra homomorphism \(h:Z\to S(H)\) of \(Z\) to the symmetric algebra of the Cartan subalgebra can be defined, is a monomorphism, and \[ h(Z)= \mathbb{C}+ \Theta \cdot S(H)^w. \] Here \(\mathbb{C}\) is the ground complex number field, \(S(H)^w\) the part of the symmetric algebra invariant under the Weyl group and \(\Theta\) an element in \(S(H)\) explicitly written as a product of linear forms. This leads to the description of central characters for the irreducible finite-dimensional representations of \(p(n)\), and the author studies the properties of these characters. Similar results for \(p'(n)=[p(n),p(n)]\) are also obtained.
