Let \(H_\theta\) denote the Schrödinger operator in \(L^2(0,\infty)\) generated by \(-{d^2\over dx^2}+ V(x)\), where \(V\in L^1_{\text{loc}}(0,\infty)\) is bounded below, and the boundary condition \(\psi(0)\cos\theta+ \psi'(0)\sin\theta= 0\), \(\theta\in [0,\pi)\). The analogous discrete problem in \(l^2(\mathbb{N})\) is denoted by \(h_\theta\). The paper deals with the effect of perturbations \(W\) of \(V\) on the absolutely continuous, singular continuous and pure point spectra of \(H_\theta\) and \(h_\theta\). In particular, results of \textit{R. del Rio}, \textit{B. Simon} and \textit{G. Stolz} [Math. Res. Lett. 1, No. 4, 437-450 (1994; Zbl 0838.34090)] concerning compactly supported \(W\) are extended to certain short range \(W\). The invariance of the local Hausdorff dimension of spectral measures under such perturbations \(W\) is also discussed.
