The paper deals with the determination of the stress field in a cantilever beam under tension, bending or flexure at infinity. This problem is important in mechanical engineering for the higher order asymptotic theory of bending of thick plates. The exact solution shows that the stress field near the corner points is unbounded. A novel method, the method of projection, is presented in the paper. The applications refer to: a) a simple tension; b) a pure bending moment; c) flexure with transverse shear force. A numerical technique is used to solve the problem. Graphs of stress at the clamped end of the beam for the three force systems are shown in the paper for different values of Poisson ratio, in comparison with Saint-Venant solution and other results from references.
