Let \(S\) be a compact subset of the real line and \(\pi\) a probability measure with support \(S\). The authors study the problem of finding for a given \(y\in S\) a sequence of polynomials \(B_n^y(x)\) satisfying \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\, \int B_n^y(x)f(x)d\pi(x)=f(y) \] for all \(f\in C(S)\). This sequence is then called a \textit{selective approximate identity} with respect to \(y\). They then prove existence and give a complete characterization in terms of the orthogonal polynomial sequence \(P_n(x)\) with respect to \(\pi\) irrespective of the existence of a so called convolution structure on \(C(S)\). They study two types of sequences: one defined by a triangular matrix of complex numbers \[ B_nY(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\,b_{n,k}^y P_k(x)h(k) \] with \(h(k)=1/\int\,P_k^2(x)d\pi(x)\) and one using a Fejér-like construction \[ F_{2n}^y(x)= {\left(\sum_{k=0}^n\, P_k(y) P_k(x)h(k)\right)^2 \over \left( \sum_{r=0}^n\, P_r^2(y)h(r)\right)}. \] In the triangular matrix case the conditions are on the complex numbers and on the boundedness of the \(L^1\)-norms of the \(B_n^y\) and in the Fejér-like case the condition is of the form \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\, {P_n^2(y)h(n) \over \sum_{r=0}^n\, P_r^2(y)h(r)}=0. \] Furthermore, they give results for measures belonging to the Nevai class \(M(b,a)\) (with \(a>0\) and, separately, \(a=0\)). Finally, they show that the operator \(F_{2n}\) on \(C(S)\) satisfies \[ F_{2n}f\in C(S) \] and \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\,| | F_{2n}f-f| | _{\infty}=0 \] for all \(f\in C(S)\). Quite a nice paper.
