Let \(X\) be a complex-analytic \((n+1)\)-dimensional irreducible variety in \(\mathbb C^{n+1}\), with \(0\in X\). Let \(\mathbb S_\epsilon\) denote the boundary of the ball \(\mathbb B_\varepsilon=\{z\in\mathbb C^{n+d+1}\); \(| z| <\varepsilon\}\), \(K_\varepsilon=X\cap\mathbb S_\varepsilon\) and \(M_\varepsilon\) the set of regular points of \(K_\varepsilon\). When \(K_\varepsilon=M_\varepsilon\), this is called the link of the singularity \((X,0)\). In general, \(M_\varepsilon\) is a smooth CR submanifold of \(X\) of hypersurface type. The authors investigate whether the CR structure of \(M_\varepsilon\) determines, modulo birational transforms, the singularity \((X,0)\). This question is answered by the affirmative, by showing that CR-immersions into the unit sphere \(\mathbb S\) of \(\mathbb C^{n+d+1}\) are rigid. Namely, if \(f,\tilde f:M\to \mathbb S\subset\mathbb C^{n+d+1}\) are smooth CR immersions of a strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurface \(M\subset\mathbb C^{n+1}\), then there is a CR-automorphism \(\phi:\mathbb S\to \mathbb S\) such that \(\widetilde f=\phi\circ f\). It is known that \(\phi\) extends to a birational transform of \(\mathbb C^{n+d+1}\) [see e.g. \textit{N. Tanaka}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 19, 215--254 (1967; Zbl 0165.56002)], thus solving the question of the biratinal equivalence. The authors obtain other interesting results under assumptions on the codimension \(d\) of the embedding and of degeneracy of the immersion mapping \(f\).
