In a nutshell, this research monograph is about uncertainty, its different facets and uncertain systems. It offers a unique and original treatment of uncertainty captured in the form of uncertain variables. The book brings together various formalisms that are used to deal with uncertainty including random variables, fuzzy sets, and fuzzy logic. It also builds a general and coherent platform generalizing those individual approaches. The book is structured into 14 chapters. The first seven chapters build a cohesive framework and deliver all necessary prerequisites. Chapter 1 and 2 deal with the architectural considerations of uncertain systems by bringing forwards their definitions, basic concepts and providing the reader with some underlying motivation. In the sequel, discussed are random variables, uncertain logics and variables, fuzzy and soft variables. Chapter 7 offers interesting insights into systems with logic knowledge representation. Dynamic uncertain systems, their stability and parametric optimization of decision systems are covered in the three consecutive chapters. The remaining chapters address general issues of learning systems, complex systems (quite often involving various manifestations of uncertainty), complexes of operations and ideas of pattern recognition cast in the realm of uncertain variables. Overall, the book is a comprehensive, highly authoritative, and lucidly written research treatise on uncertain systems -- highly recommended to all involved in the analysis, design and applications of systems with uncertainty.
