Let \({\mathfrak A}\) be the UHF algebra formed as the infinite tensor product of a sequence \(\{B_ k\}\) of \(n\times n\) complex matrix algebras. The authors exhibit a canonical embedding of \(S(\infty)\) (the group of finite permutations of \({\mathbb{N}})\) into the unitary group of \({\mathfrak A}\) and prove the following result: ''If \(\delta\) is a (densely defined) symmetric *-derivation on \({\mathfrak A}\) which vanishes on \(S(\infty)\), and satisfy \(\tau {\mathbb{O}}\delta =0\) (where \(\tau\) is the unique normalized trace on \({\mathfrak A})\), then \(\delta\) has an extension \({\hat \delta}\) whih is a generator of a strongly continuous one-parameter group of automorphisms \(\{\beta_ t\}_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}\), such that \(\beta_ t\) can be identified with the product of infinitely many copies of \(\beta_ t| B_ 1''.\) This is motivated by previous work of \textit{F. Goodman} and \textit{P. E. T. Jørgensen} [Commun. Math. Phys. 82, 399-405 (1981; Zbl 0501.46061)].
