The authors study the existence and nonexistence of global positive solutions of the following boundary value problem for the convective porous medium equation \[ u_t=(u^m)_{xx}+ \mu/n(u^n)_x, \qquad x\in(0,1), \quad t>0, \] \[ (u^m)_x|_{x=0}=0, \qquad (u^m)_x|_{x=1}= au^p,\quad t>0, \qquad u(x,0)= u_0(x)>0, \quad x\in[0,1], \] where \(m,n,\mu,p,a>0\), \(u_0\in C[0,1]\). The main results read as follows. Assume that \(u(x,t)\) is the solution of the boundary value problem and \(m\geq 1\): (i) If \(m\leq n\), then \(p+n-1\leq m\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) exists globally; \(p+n-1>m\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) blows up in finite time. (ii) If \(m>n\), then \(p\leq1\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) exists globally; \(p>1\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) blows up in finite time. For \(m<1\) the following holds: (iii) If \(2p\leq m+1\), then \(n\leq m-p+1\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) exists globally; \(n>m-p+1\) implies that \(u(x,t)\) blows up in finite time. (iv) If \(2p>m+1\), then \(u(x,t)\) blows up in finite time.
