A finite dimensional algebra \(A\) over an algebraically closed field is said to be biserial if for each indecomposable projective left or right \(A\)-module \(P\), the radical \(\text{Rad }P\) is the sum of two uniserial submodules whose intersection is simple or zero. The author proves that biserial algebras are of tame representation type. This generalizes previous results of \textit{B. Wald} and \textit{J. Waschbüsch} [J. Algebra 95, 480-500 (1985; Zbl 0567.16017)], and others. For the proof of this theorem, a modification of \textit{C. Geiß'} result [Arch. Math. 64, No. 1, 11-16 (1995; Zbl 0828.16013)] is presented. The latter states that an algebra \(A\) is tame if it allows a degeneration into a tame algebra. The author's modification concerns the variation of the relations instead of the structural constants of \(A\). A structure theorem for biserial algebras, which also enters into the proof, was established in the author's joint paper with \textit{R. Vila-Freyer} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. (to appear)].
