Let \(R\) be a commutative local ring with non-zero radical, and \(A\) an artinian algebra which is finitely generated and free over \(R\). The category \(\text{mod}^RA\) of \(A\)-modules which are f.g. and free over \(R\), is studied. The authors prove that \(A\) is self-injective if and only if \(\text{mod}^RA\) is stable, i.e. if for each indecomposable non-projective (non-injective) \(M\) in \(\text{mod}^RA\), the dual of the transpose \(\text{Dtr }M\) (resp. \(\text{trD }M\)) is in \(\text{mod}^RA\). In this case, it is proved that the Auslander-Reiten component containing \(M\) has no projectives (injectives). Thus if \(A\) is representation-finite, then \(\text{mod}^RA\) cannot contain an indecomposable module which is not projective or injective. For an ideal \(J\) of \(A\), the relationship between \(\text{mod }A\) and \(\text{mod }A/J\) is studied. If \(A\) is symmetric and \(I\) an ideal of \(R\) with \(R/I\) finite and \(A/IA\) symmetric and representation-finite, it is shown that all components of \(\text{mod}^RA\) are periodic. This applies, for example, to the group algebra \(A=RC_p\) over the ring \(R\) of integers modulo \(p^r\), \(p\) prime, and \(I=\text{Rad }R\).
