    An operator \(T\in {\mathcal L}(X)\) on a complex Banach space X is decomposable if for every open covering \(\{U_ 1,U_ 2\}\) of \({\mathbb{C}}\) there exist \(X_ 1,X_ 2\in Lat(T)\) such that \(X_ 1+X_ 2=X\) and \(\sigma (T| X_ j)\subset U_ j\) \((j=1,2)\). For a decomposable operator T and any closed \(F\subset {\mathbb{C}}\) one defines the spectral maximal space \[ X_ T(F):=\{x\in X:\quad \sigma_ T(x)\subset F\}, \] where \(\sigma_ T(x)\) denotes the local spectrum of T at x. In this paper the algebraic representation \[ X_ T(F)=\cap_{\lambda \in {\mathbb{C}}\setminus F}(T-\lambda)^ pX\quad for\quad all\quad closed\quad F\subset {\mathbb{C}}, \] with a suitable integer \(p\geq 1\), is derived for the following classes of decomposable operators: (a) generalized scalar operators (i.e., operators admitting a continuous functional calculus \(\Phi\) : \(C^{\infty}({\mathbb{C}})\to {\mathcal L}(X));\) (b) operators possessing a continuous functional calculus \(\Phi\) : \(Lip_{\alpha}(K)\to {\mathcal L}(X)\) where \(0<\alpha <1\), \(K\subset {\mathbb{C}}\) compact; (c) operators possessing a continuous functional calculus \(\Phi\) : \(C^{k,\alpha}(I)\to {\mathcal L}(X)\) where \(k\in {\mathbb{N}}_ 0\), \(0<\alpha <1\), \(I\subset {\mathbb{R}}^ a \)compact interval; (d) spectral operators in the sense of Dunford. These results extend previous results in this area. Using appropriate partitions of unity, the authors give a unified approach.
