A diploid population with recombination is considered, which evolves on the two-dimensional torus \(T(L)\) of a side-length \(L\). The population dynamics are driven by a Poisson point process of events. An event specifies a spatial region \(A\) and a proportion \(u\) of individuals within \(A\) which are replaced by offsprings of a finite (random) number of its inhabitants. Two types of events are considered: small events in which \(A\) is a disc of radius \(O(1)\) and much rearer large events of radius \(O(L^\alpha)\), \(\alpha\in(0,1)\). The small events represent ``ordinary'' reproduction and the ``large'' events represent extinction/recolonization events. Genealogic relationships are investigated for two linked loci in the case when \(L\to\infty\) and the spatial distance between the two sampled individuals is large in comparison to the radius of the large event and small in comparison to \(L\). Asymptotic distributions of the coalescence times at the two loci are derived. Under different conditions, the authors derive a complete decorrelation of the coalescense times or a sharp transition from the initial period of complete correlation to independence.
