The qualitative theory of dynamical systems has been used to investigate all possible solutions to the Einstein field equations for a class of spatially homogeneous vacuum cosmological models with higher dimensions. Specifically the study of (Robertson-Walker)\(\times (n\)-sphere) and the (Robertson-Walker)\(\times (n\)-sphere)\(\times (torus)\) models show that the classical general relativistic evolution of the system leads to a spontaneous compactification of the extra dimensions. The field equations for the extended RW model are reduced to a 2- dimensional autonomous system. The evolution of the system is exhibited in 3 phase space diagrams for the cases \(k=0\), \(\pm 1\) when \(N=3\) and \(n=7\) (dimensions of the space of constant curvature and the sphere, respectively). A simple extension is done to include the abelian gauge group U(1) (torus symmetry). This leads to a 3-dimensional autonomous system which has the integral trajectories exhibited in a phase space diagram.
