The authors characterize Hölder spaces \(C^{\alpha}\) and Zygmund spaces \(C^\alpha_*\) in terms of the growth of the derivatives of a smooth approximation sequence obtained by convolution. Let \(T\) be a distribution and \(T_n\) its mollification at scale \(1/n\). Theorem 1 asserts that the condition \(\sup|D^m T_n| =O(n^s)\), imposed for all multi-indexes \(m\) with \(|m|\leq k\), characterizes \(C_*^{k-s}\). One should compare these results with the characterization of \(B_{\infty,\infty}^s\) given by \textit{H.-Q. Bui} and \textit{M. H. Taibleson} [J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 6, No. 5, 537--550 (2000; Zbl 0972.42015)] and \textit{H. Šikic} and \textit{M. H. Taibleson} [in Bakic, D. (ed.) et al., Functional analysis VII. Proceedings of the postgraduate school and conference. Var. Publ. Ser., Aarhus Univ. 46, 181--186 (2002; Zbl 1034.46030)].
