The motivation of this paper is to construct even unimodular lattices in a similar way as a known construction for the Leech lattice from the binary Golay code of length 24 by lifting it to a self dual code over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\). Therefore the authors study self-dual codes over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\), more particular double circulant codes over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\). In section 2 of the paper some basic facts on the weight enumerators of self-dual codes over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\) are listed. In section 3 a class of self dual double circulant codes over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\) is defined. Theorem 9 of this section has some misprints in it such as the expression for \(MM^T\) in which row-vectors and column-vectors are mixed up. In the expression for \((MM^T_\infty)\) there is a calculation error: \((p+5)/2\) must be \((5p+1)/2\), but this is also congruent to 0 mod 8 so the result is the same. In the proof of this Theorem some words should have been spent on remarking that the codes generated by the given matrices are nondegenerate i.e. they have the right numbers (a 4-power) of words (Those familiar with codes over \(\mathbb{Z}_4\) can see this immediately from the special form of the matrices). The definition of the matrix \(S\) in Theorem 10 contains a nasty error, the matrix should read: \(S= \left (\begin{smallmatrix} 0 & 3P_{-1} \\ P_{-1} & 0 \end{smallmatrix} \right)\). In Section 4 of the paper the constructed double circulant code of length 40 (i.e. constructed by taking \(p=19\) in the construction of Section 3) is used to obtain a 40-dimensional unimodular lattice.
