    Let us denote by \(F\) a number field and let \(F_v\) denote a completion of \(F\) at the place \(v\). We denote by \(L_{JS}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2})\) the Jacquet-Shalika exterior square \(L\)-function attached to an irreducible representation \(\pi_v\) of \(\mathrm{GL}(n, F_v)\) and by \(L_{Sh}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2})\) the Langlands-Shahidi exterior square \(L\)-function attached to the same representation. We denote the global \(L\)-functions by \(L_{JS}(s, \pi, \wedge^{2})\) and \(L_{Sh}(s, \pi, \wedge^{2})\). Using mostly global methods, the authors prove that for an irreducible smooth square-integrable representation \(\pi_v\) of \(\mathrm{GL}(n, F_v)\) we have the following equality of local exterior square \(L\)-functions: \[ L_{JS}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2}) = L_{Sh}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2}). \] It is also proved that for even \(n\) and irreducible generic representation \(\pi_v\) of \(GL(n, F_v)\) we have \[ L_{JS}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2}) = L_{Sh}(s, \pi_v, \wedge^{2}), \] which directly implies that for cuspidal automorphic representation \(\pi = \otimes'_{v} \pi_v\) of \(\mathrm{GL}(n, \mathbb{A}_F)\), with \(n\) even, we have \[ L_{JS}(s, \pi, \wedge^{2}) = L_{Sh}(s, \pi, \wedge^{2}). \]
