The radiation boundary condition for a finite difference method used to approximate the Helmholtz equation is considered. It is shown that an improved radiation boundary condition can be constructed starting from the asymptotic solution of the finite difference equation. In a number of illustrative examples, computed results show that the near radiation boundary condition yields reflection free solutions even when a small number of grid points per wavelength is used.
