Let \(N\) be a compact, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with \(\partial N\) a connected totally geodesic surface of genus 2. In the paper under review the following results are proved: (1) Let us denote by \(\text{Hg}(N)\) the Heegaard genus and assume that \(\text{Hg}(N)\geq 5\), then \(N\) has volume greater than 6.89 (2) Let \(M\) be a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with \(\dim_{\mathbb{Z}_2}(m; \mathbb{Z}_2)\geq 5\), and suppose that the cup product map \(H^1(M;\mathbb{Z}_2)\otimes H^1(M;\mathbb{Z}_2)\to H^2(M;\mathbb{Z}_2)\) has image of dimension at most one. Then \(M\) has volume greater than 3.44. The result (2) is deduced by combining Theorem (1) with results from \textit{M. Culler}, \textit{J. DeBlois} and \textit{P. B. Shalen} [Commun. Anal. Geom. 17, No. 2, 155--184 (2009; Zbl 1187.57020)] and \textit{M. Culler} and \textit{P. B. Shalen} [Topology Appl. 158, No. 1, 118--131 (2011; Zbl 1207.57022)]. The proof of the result (1) uses the following dichotomy: either the shortest return path (defined by Kojima-Miyamoto) of \(N\) is long, or \(N\) has an embedded codimension-0 submanifold \(X\) with incompressible boundary \(T\sqcup N\), where \(T\) is the frontier of \(X\) in \(N\), which is not a book of \(I\)-bundles. It is also proved that if \(M\) is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold containing a closed, connected incompressible surface of genus 2 or 3, and \(\text{Hg}(M)\geq 8\), then \(M\) has volume greater than 6.89. The theorem (1) can be regarded as an extension of Kojima-Miyamoto's theorem.
