The authors consider quasilinear weakly hyperbolic equations of the form \[ u_{tt}-\lambda^2 (t)b^2(t)u_{xx} +h(t)u_x =f(t,x,u_x) \] with initial conditions \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\), \(u_t(x,0)= u_1(x)\), where \(\lambda(t)\in C^2( [0,T_0])\) denotes a damping term while \(b(t)\in C^2([0,T_0])\) is a fast oscillating factor and show that under certain assumptions satisfied by \(\lambda (t)\), \(b(t)\) and \(h(t)\) there exist constants \(r\) and \(T^*\) such that \(u_0\in W_1^r(\mathbb{R})\) and \(u_0\in W_1^{r-1} (\mathbb{R})\) yield the existence of a locally defined solution \[ u\in C^2\bigl([0,T^*]; H^3(\mathbb{R})\bigr)\cap C^1\bigl( [0,T^*]; H^2(\mathbb{R})\bigr) \cap C^2\bigl([0,T^*]; H^1(\mathbb{R})\bigr). \] To this end they apply a successive approximation scheme which replaces the given equation by an equivalent system of differential equations, and compute estimates for the iterates.
