Apart from a readable introduction of notions like: Syzygies, Free Resolutions and Extension Modules, this paper contains a classification, in terms of extension modules, of controllability and autonomy properties of linear multidimensional systems over certain signal spaces (the smooth functions in the continuous case, and arbitrary sequences defined on \(\mathbb{Z}^r\) in the discrete case). The author concentrates on one of the most distinctive features of Gröbner bases: They make it possible to compute Syzygies and hence free resolutions of polynomial modules. For a fairly complete account of applications of Gröbner bases in behavioral linear multidimensional systems theory, the author refers to [\textit{H. Pillai}, \textit{J. Wood} and \textit{E. Rogers}, Proc. NDS 2000, Czocha Castle, Poland, 83-89 (2000; Zbl 0966.93059)].
